This elegant 18th century country house is situated amid the quiet of the Somerset countryside, yet within reach of the M5, just 8 km (5 miles) from Taunton and Ilminster.

Farthings overlooks the village green and enjoys 3 acres of private and peaceful gardens. With a wonderfully relaxing and informal atmosphere, it is the ideal place in which to unwind.

Privately-owned, the family and its experienced staff invite guests to savour the warm hospitality and superb locally sourced food, cooked and presented in the AA Rosette-awarded restaurant. The restaurant has direct access to the gardens, where drinks and canapes can be enjoyed on a warm summer's evening. In winter, enjoy the comfort and warmth of log fires in the cosy lounge or bar.

Each of the 12 en suite rooms is tastefully decorated and has all the facilities one would expect of a delightful country house hotel.

The restaurant features only the very best of fresh, local and seasonal produce. Beef and lamb is sourced from local farms; the pork is free-range and from Wellington (4.8 km/3 miles north-west of Taunton); the fish is delivered daily from Brixham and the cheeses are local.

Delightful en suite guest rooms are all individually decorated with style to reflect the 18th century construction of the building. All rooms offer fine bed linens.

Area information

Ideally located for visiting numerous attractions, including Barrington Court, Forde Abbey, Montacute House, Hestercombe Gardens and the West Somerset Railway.

Wells Cathedral, Cheddar Gorge, Longleat Safari Park and the cities of Exeter and Bristol are easily accessible.

The hotel is within easy reach of Taunton, Ilminster, Chard and Yeovil.

The hotel was small and friendly. Our room was comfortable and well-furnished and had a lovely view of the garden. It was also easy to find, being well-signposted off the main road, and within easy driving distance of the main attractions in Somerset.

Nice to have some country living. Not stuck in the same old bulk standard hotel rooms

TV noise from room to room was terrible. If someone in the room next to you or above you has their TV on, don't expect a silent night.

Good location, easy secure parking, Well presented guest house with comfortable size room, pleasantly decorated and in good clean order.

Restaurant was a little steep for both dinner and breakfast menus

See "excellent" ratings for staff, facilities, cleanliness and comfort

Altho' the food and service were excellent - £185 for food and drinks for 4 people was painful- hence the "fair" rating in overall value for money. Would advise others to stay at hotel (which was excellent value at £79 per room) but not to eat or drink there

The pub down the road!

Everything! The room was beautiful (garden room) staff attentive but not stifling. The hotel was in a world of its own but so close to the motorway. Would definitely stay there again.

Price of breakfast - but it was very nice!

The room was superb, light and airy with nice furnishings. Plenty of tea and coffee and a fridge in the hall if we needed fresh milk etc. The staff were there if needed and very helpful and friendly. We only had breakfast in the hotel but this was substancial with plenty of choice, finishing off with coffee in the garden. All in all a superb week-end. Can't wait to return.
