Castlemaine was built in 1886 by George Newman. It then became the summer residence of the Austro-Hungarian ambassador and his wife, the Baron and Baroness Hengelmueler. The Washington heat was too much for the ambassador and his wife, so they summered in Bar Harbor for its cool ocean breezes and lively social life.

Striking architectural details and antique furnishings honor the history of this Bar Harbor landmark. Castlemaine was converted to a B&B in 1981, and was purchased by its present owners, Dan and Dede Daigle, in 2007.

Our street is quiet and just a few steps from many fabulous restaurants, the Island Explorer bus, shopping, hiking, museums, theatre and a myriad of other activities. Bar Harbor is a destination in itself, and the ideal base for exploring Acadia National Park and coastal Maine.

We are committed to providing a superior level of service and hospitality, as well as warmth and personal attention.

Castlemaine rooms are pristine and the linens lush. Whirlpool baths, Wi-Fi in all rooms, balconies, air-conditioning, cable television—the Inn's ten rooms and seven suites offer space, luxury, and all the modern conveniences to make your stay here the best part of your vacation.
