Area information
This small, in English landscape style created, park in the (Oud Zuid) district, called the Sarphatipark, is a place to escape hectic city life. The 4 hectares large neighbourhood park became completed in 1885 and was named after Dr. Samuel Sarphati (1813- 1866), a gifted idealist, of Jewish origin, who became meritorious
to the city of Amsterdam by setting up all kinds of important and large- scale projects. During WWII, the bust of the Sarphati monument, had to be removed by order of the German occupiers.
In the last year of the war the park was used as a rubbish dump.
The park regained its old splendour after two redecorations in 1975 and 1994.
